Off to Gary Con!

There will be a variety of Tekumel-related events at GaryCon this upcoming weekend in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.  Now in its 7th year, GaryCon is clearly one of the best conventions around for Old School role-playing – which definitely includes Empire of the Petal Throne.  If you haven’t considered going, please go take a look at the GaryCon website and the range of events and activities going on. The dates for Gary Con VII are March 26th – 29th, 2015; pre-registration is closed, but onsite badges will be available.

The Foundation is happy to report that sales of The Man of Gold have been steady since its release as an ebook one month ago.  We’re also moving closer to its release as a print-on-demand book. One particular difference between the original DAW release and the latest edition is the addition of diacritical marks missing from the original paperback.  You can get the ebook for Kindle, Nook, and Kobo – we’re working to release it for iTunes, as well.

Sakbe Roads and New Games

Sakbe Road UNIgames

The Tékumel Foundation is very pleased to announce that three new foamcore kits have been approved for Tékumel, and are available from UNIgames, the publishers of Béthorm!  In addition to the Sakbe Road, there are two buildings – The Wayhouse of the Blue Sun and a smaller outbuilding.  The design of both buildings was inspired by drawings and illustrations made by Prof. Barker.

In addition to the foamcore kits, another game is in the works – this time to be played on your tablet, smartphone or PC via Steam.  The Foundation has been working closely with Choice of Games LLC to produce Choice of the Petal Throne; look for it shortly!

The Man of Gold is now available!

The Tekumel Foundation is pleased to announce that The Man of Gold, Professor Barker’s first published novel, is now available as an e-publication from the following distributors:

Plans are underway for producing a print-on-demand version, which should be available shortly.  We are working to make Prof. Barker’s next novel, Flamesong, available later this year.  We hope you enjoy this new release, and we look forward to inviting a new generation of fantasy & science fiction readers to experience the world of Tekumel.

Coming soon!

The Tekumel Foundation is pleased to announce that The Man of Gold will soon be available as an eBook publication.  Working with noted author and publisher Leah Cutter of Knotted Road Press, the Foundation is in the final stages of preparing Prof. Barker’s first published novel for release.  Look for it soon!

Another 40th Anniversary…

OD&D Men & Magic cover

OD&D Men & Magic cover

It’s the 40th Anniversary of the release of Original Dungeons & Dragons (OD&D)!  As Jon Peterson has already chronicled, sometime in January 1974 was the original public release date for Original Dungeons & Dragons.  It is a anniversary well worth celebrating, as it was the start of a huge shift in popular culture around the world.

Somewhat less well known is the fact that Michael Mornard – better known as “Old Geezer” in online RPG forums – was the person who introduced Professsor Barker to OD&D in the fall of 1973.  Professor Barker was the faculty advisor for the Conflict Simulation Association (CSA), a student organization at the University of Minnesota.  Michael began attending meetings of the CSA, and it was there he began running his own OD&D game, and as a result, gave Professor Barker an opportunity to experience OD&D.  Later, in early 1974, Professor Barker produced the “green cover” or “mimeo” set of rules for what would become Empire of the Petal Throne.

As part of the process of cataloging Professor Barker’s vast collection of games and material related to Tekumel, we discovered Professor Barker’s copy of OD&D.  When we looked inside the covers, though, we discovered that Professor Barker not only signed the books but dated them as well.  We hope you enjoy these photos, courtesy of Bob Alberti.
